'V'ictory over ingrown nails

Cutting a 'V' in the end of the nail is one of those ever-popular 'old husband' tales. The concept is based on the misguided notion that the nail grows from the nail bed. In theory the nail (supposedly) grows together. For the hopeful 'bathroom' surgeon it does appear that over time the 'V' gets smaller and does so because of normal wear.

Patients complain that the procedure results in damage to their stockings as well as an occasional unintended laceration. Sadly, the nail continues to be ingrown fostering other forms of unspeakable self-mutilation.

Initial infections and later permanent correction are office procedures offered by a Podiatrist who teaches this procedure in a school of Podiatry.
