Advances in ingrown nail care

Recent advances in diabetic wound care has proven of great value in the surgical treatment of ingrown nails says lecturer and Gold Coast Podiatrist Phillip R Perlman. The material - hydrogel (IntraSite) is available as a non-prescription product that is applied by the patient over the post-operative nail on a daily basis. A single, folded sterile gauze is next placed over the gel and is maintained with a piece of paper tape.

Basically, the gel produces a moist wound environment. Acting as a natural debriding agent the product reduces normally occurring post-operative redness and inflammation promoting more rapid healing.

This essentially allows patients the opportunity to wear their normal shoes with little or no discomfort. The patient may continue a daily exercise program and (under special arrangements) abstain from making beds and doing the dishes! Final healing usually occurs in four weeks.
