Prevention of adolescent ingrown nails

Excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis) and heaven forbid odour (bromadrosis) is a most frequent visitor to the adolescent male. In severe cases a pharmacist can prepare formalin 2% solution, but you will smell like a cadaver.

The simplest and most common regiment is tea soaks. Real tea (vs herbal variety) contains tannic acid - a skin drying agent (astringent). Five tea bags are added to 1/2 litre of water, boiled (no lemon please) and used as a daily 15 minute soak. The solution can be reused and stored for up to 4 days.

The other self care suggestion is to round the corners of a nail and not cut them too short. Careful... too much digging around in the edges creates infection. Sensible advice for anyone in doubt is have someone else take a look first.

As always if an infection does occur these self care suggestions alone are no longer of value. The patient should immediately seek Podiatric advice.
